The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 - update

The impact of recent legislative changes to the Disability Discrimination Act [DDA], which came into force on 1st October last year, will have a significant effect on the relationship between landlords and tenants.  The number of people with disabilities within Great Britain is close to 10 million, therefore it is important that landlords and tenants are aware of what they need to do ensure a property is compliant with the DDA.

Landlords must be aware of their obligations, and tenants must know who is responsible for ensuring the building is accessible to disabled people, and also the allocation of responsibility for the cost of doing this.  Terms of the lease need to be carefully set out in order to minimise confusion and allocate costs of the changes required by the DDA.
