Head of Semple Fraser’s Digital Economy and Life Sciences groups is re-accredited as IP specialist

Scott Kerr, head of the firm’s Digital Economy and Life Sciences Groups, has been re-accredited as a specialist in Intellectual Property law.

The Law Society of Scotland accreditation recognises solicitors who have developed specialist knowledge during their careers and who have dealt with complex or unusual cases which has allowed them to build on and apply their expertise.

Scott has over 20 years’ legal experience and advises clients on all aspects of intellectual property law. He has built up a large portfolio of client companies across a wide range of technologies, advising them on all aspects of their business, including equity fundraising, and provides intellectual property advice to key clients including Braveheart Investment Group, CMG Worldwide, The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, Threebrand Design, the Avian Group, Collis, Verisim, Eden Springs, the Simclar Group and the OSS Group. Scott also acts for Glenmorangie, the distiller of the eponymous whisky, and its parent company LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy), recently advising on labelling and marketing materials to ensure that they are compliant with the new Scotch Malt Whisky Regulations well in advance of the introduction of the legislation.

Semple Fraser’s renowned expertise in intellectual property law has helped strengthen their offering to and focus on key industries such as Digital Economy and Life Sciences, where intellectual property is often the nucleus of the business. Scott and his team advise a number of active clients in these sectors taking into account all the intellectual property rights which may be involved – copyright, design right, patents, know-how and trade marks. Understanding the importance of these rights to the clients business ensures that the businesses are protected and exploited to their full potential.

Scott’s intellectual property expertise extends to regularly speaking on intellectual property issues (having been invited to speak at courses run by The Law Society of Scotland) and he is also contributing to the course materials for the e-access LLM in Intellectual Property Law run by the University of Edinburgh.

Scott Kerr comments:

“For many businesses, especially those operating in the digital economy or involved in life sciences, either their key asset or their key method of operation will be based on some form of technology. Their core is their intellectual property, whatever form that might take – patents, know-how, copyright, secret formulae and processes. It is essential, therefore, that such assets and methods are protected fully allowing them to be exploited to their full potential.”

Managing Partner, Alister Fraser, adds:

“As a firm, we are committed to ongoing training and development in order to provide our clients with true specialists, with a unique understanding of the key issues affecting their business. I am delighted that Scott has once again received this recognition from the Law Society.”
