REG BioPower pioneeer renewable energy from used cooking oils

Semple Fraser have partnered with the leading bioenergy company, REG Biopower to secure “end of waste” status for processed used cooking oil, to secure the future of their new recycled fuel product.

REG Biopower has developed an industry leading process which transfers energy from a renewable source, used cooking oil, into carbon neutral electricity. Used cooking oil contains unused energy that can be turned into a renewable fuel. The patented process avoids any of the disadvantages associated with biofuels, primarily the addition of any chemicals or supplements. This recycled fuel is called LF100.

Used cooking oil is contained in certain biofuels, but has until now only been effective with the addition of chemicals and additives. This is what makes LF100 unique – it is produced by a completely additive free process.

The client’s customer base is a combination of private catering undertakings, water/sewage companies and local authorities. Large scale producers of used cooking oils often struggle to get rid of the oil, and the water/sewage undertakers seek to divert oil from their sewerage infrastructure due to the extensive damage that it causes to the infrastructure.

Issues of EU law threatened the commercial success of LF100. The first of these is that you cannot do this unless you secure “end of waste” status for the processed used cooking oil BEFORE it goes into the generator. This is a complex legal matter which rests on interpretation of EU case law.

Working with the client’s scientists, we have secured what we think is the first “end of waste” certification handed out by the Environment Agency for a processed fuel made from used cooking oil.

Semple Fraser are also working with REG Biopower to assist them in getting the Government to adjust the law in England & Wales on permitting requirements.
