Semple Fraser advise Lhoist on fuel duty levy
Semple Fraser are working with Lhoist UK to try to overturn an aspect of UK legislation which imposes fuel duty on Lhoist’s use of recycled fuel oil in their lime manufacturing plant.
Lhoist UK, a new client for the firm, are part of the global Lhoist Group, the world’s leading producer of lime and dolomite, which has operations throughout Europe and America. The lime industry is a strategically vital contributor to a huge range of downstream environmental, industrial, social and construction activities.
Lime products are an essential ingredient in many applications such as the treatment of drinking water, sewage and effluent treatment, acid gas treatment etc. However, Lhoist have extended this by researching, designing and manufacturing a range of products which enable a range of other industries (e.g. glassworks, lead battery recyclers, waste incinerators) to achieve optimum emissions reductions through acid gas neutralisation, heavy metal removal, and dioxin and furan capture.
Semple Fraser’s environment team is leading a sustained lobbying campaign to engage with Ministers and Civil Servants in Westminster to secure a change in the law on the basis of key environmental protection and waste legal arguments.
