REACH and the recovery of waste
The EC Regulation on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) has brought widespread changes to the regulation of chemical substances across the EU, replacing approximately 40 pieces of legislation with the new REACH regime.
One of the unexpected outcomes of REACH is the link between the new regime and the waste management, recovery and recycling sector. The waste industry drives forward with increasingly innovative methods of transforming waste into commercial products and raw materials, and in the more ambitious projects reaches “end-of-waste” status. At the same time, ironically, it can find itself falling foul of the REACH regime.
Frying pan into the fire? Well, may be not. For companies manufacturing recovered products and raw materials from waste, the challenges faced in the immediate future are focused on complying with the imminent registration deadline of 30 November 2010.
To help and guide you we have produced a Briefing Note which addresses the key components of the link between REACH and end-of-waste, and offers practical tips on what needs to be done now.
