TRAINEE TESTIMONIALS
For an insight into what it is like to train and work at Semple Fraser, please look at what some of our current and past trainees have to say.
Lisa belford, Solicitor - litigation (trainee 2008-2010)
"From my first interview at Semple Fraser, I wanted to work here, so I was thrilled when I was offered a training contract! Luckily, I was quite right to be so excited. The people, the atmosphere and the opportunities I have been given at Semple Fraser have been fantastic. I have had the chance to work in more than one department. I spent a full year in commercial property, which allowed me to really get to grips with the area. It also meant that I was given more responsibility and more of my own files, as well as working on bigger deals with the rest of my team.
Semple Fraser has some huge clients, and the kind of work that comes from them is, as you would expect, accordingly varied and interesting. At the other end of the scale, acting for individuals and smaller businesses has given me the chance to see transactions from different viewpoints. In Commercial and Property Litigation, I am acting for a wide range of clients in different types of disputes – it certainly keeps me interested!
I am now based in the Manchester office, in Commercial and Property Litigation. The new office is a really exciting place to be and is expanding rapidly (even since I started in the new office in June, we have outgrown our offices and recruited 3 more staff). The fact that the office is so new also means there is a lot of opportunity to get involved in growing the business and networking events, such as seminars run by the firm. Everybody here is incredibly friendly and it is fantastic that the whole office is on a first names terms basis – from the support staff to the partners. It creates a really positive atmosphere to work in.”
fiona barker, solicitor – planning (trainee 2007-2009)
"Semple Fraser is one of the only firms in Scotland to offer a specialised traineeship, which really appealed to me. I was aware that if I changed my training seat every six months I would become a Newly Qualified 'jack of all trades' but master of none! I knew I'd much rather specialise early on and get to grips with one particular area of the law. Having come to that conclusion, I set my heart on a two year traineeship in Planning Law and now, more than three years on and qualified, I know it was the right decision. I'm working hard, always learning new skills and really enjoying the variety and quality of the work.
For me, a fulfilling, enjoyable career has as much to do with your working environment and the people you work with as the work itself. There's a real sense of 'teamwork' at Semple Fraser and everyone genuinely gets on very well. The partners are friendly and approachable and make you feel as if your contribution is valued."
